Fleeman's U-Pick Blueberry farm has been a "labor of love" and a determination to make "lemonade out of lemons".
When a 4-lane state highway was constructed through the property, the land could no longer be used as before. Owners, John and Brenda Fleeman began researching possible ideas for land use and the idea of Fleeman's U-Pick Blueberries was born.
All work, which included preparing the land, irrigation system, planting, etc. was completed by the owners with advice from the local county extension agent and a helpful fellow blueberry grower from a neighboring county.
The first bushes were planted in December of 1998. The weather was generally cooperative but since the daylight hours were short some of the young bushes were planted by the light of a full moon. Then the weather took a turn for the worse and the last few bushes were planted during a heavy sleet.
